This is an antique/vintage Japanese export porcelain open sugar bowl (missing its original lid) being sold as a replacement piece or an elegant vanity vessel.

Hand-crafted with exceptional artistry, it reflects the romantic, highly ornate aesthetics of Nippon or early Morimura era wares from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Traditional Asian porcelain tea pots and sugar jars almost exclusively feature three feet. Having five distinct peg feetis a rare manufacturing variation. The use of heavily textured, raised gold moriage lines paired with a soft pink background wash makes it visually stunning.

Body & Form

  • Shape: A bulbous, globular jar or urn silhouette featuring a short, slightly flared neck and a wide circular opening.

  • Handles: Two elegant twin loop side handles sweeping out from the upper shoulders, contoured dynamically for finger placement. [1]

  • Unique Five-Footed Base: The lower body tapers into an unusual configuration of five distinct peg feet, rather than a standard tripod style. The unglazed footpads exhibit natural aging and minor oxidation consistent with authentic table wear.

Color Palette & Surface Decoration

  • Ground: Finished in a soft, delicate matte baby pink or pastel rose wash that covers the outer exterior walls.

  • Gilded Motifs: Richly accented with raised gold gilding and moriage-style scroll details across the face. The artwork features hand-painted, multi-petaled blossoms (modeled after traditional Japanese chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms) accompanied by creeping vines and fine accent leaves filled with vibrant orange-red enamel pigments.

  • Interior: A clean, contrasting glazed white porcelain interior walls that curve down smoothly to the bottom.

Dimensions & Condition Summary

  • Measurements: Spans exactly 5.5 inches wide from handle-to-handle edge and stands 3.5 inches tallfrom the table surface to the upper lip.

  • Condition Report: Pre-owned vintage condition. The original structural top lid is missing, which exposes a manufactured recessed ledge along the inner upper rim. The underside of one peg foot shows a fine, dark hairline anomaly/firing mark, and there is minor, age-appropriate rubbing on the gold gilt on higher handles and rims
